FEARS are growing for two hikers missing in bushland south-west of Sydney after a third member of their group was rescued yesterday.

The search was called off in fading light amid confusion caused by a communications blackout between police and rescuers.

"Unfortunately, the mobile phone reception is not too good - it's the middle of a national park," a police spokeswoman said. She denied the rescuers had got lost.

The three Wollongong men, one 30 and two 25, went into the Burragong catchment area south of Yerranderrie on Thursday night, apparently on an overnight trip.

On Friday night, one became separated. Police rescued him in a helicopter just before lunchtime yesterday. The search for the two others resumes today.

* Police believe a Danish tourist missing for 17 days on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania fell from the peak. Kasper Sorensen's backpack and passport were found at the summit.
