HAVING flown back from the US mid-year with an end to his exile from the game in mind, Stuart Dew very nearly missed the flight that will start his career over.

Drafted last Saturday by Hawthorn, Dew was expected to join the near half of the club's list that will fly out for Papua New Guinea and the infamous Kokoda Trail tomorrow, only to discover he did not have a valid passport.

So, as his two fellow draftees, Cyril Rioli and Brendan Whitecross, prepared for their imminent introduction to pre-season punishment, Dew was cutting through something almost as formidable as the Kokoda jungle - the red tape to obtain a new passport.

The travelling party, which also includes coach Alastair Clarkson and chief executive Ian Robson, will spend just over a week on the track, primarily to allow younger players and more recent arrivals to the club to share in the experience that was used in 2004 to begin Clarkson's time. -- STEPHEN RIELLY
